An interview with Kent Owen who is currently completing his Building Apprenticeship and who supports our Apprentice Connect program.

 

How would you describe yourself in one word?

Outgoing or Hardworking

What made you choose to do an Apprenticeship?

Being qualified in Building means that in the future it can take me in many different directions – you can’t go wrong with a Trade.

Where are you doing your Apprenticeship?

Taupo House removals – I get to travel every so often as well as doing different jobs in Taupo.

How did you find out about your Apprenticeship?

Toi Ohomai and family support

What challenges are you currently facing with your Apprenticeship?

I struggle with my book-work but I have support from Toi Ohomai, my bosses and Apprentice Connect. Everyday is different at work, anything can change overnight.

Have you been able to apply the skills you learned at school in your Apprenticeship?

I left school 3 days before my 16th birthday and struggled my way through when I was there.

What advice would you give other young people considering an Apprenticeship?

Just do it! Take every bit of help offered to you! I didn’t start until I was 26 but I don’t regret it.

What is a life lesson you have learned so far?

Take every opportunity – you never know where it’s going to take you.

What has the Apprenticeship helped you to achieve in your personal life?

Communication skills as well as the understanding of making sure you keep on top of paperwork. Ask if you don’t know!

What are your hobbies?

Hunting, Fishing – there is always time to enjoy what you love doing most.

What are your plans for the future?

Finish my Apprenticeship and maybe build my own home.
