Butchery Apprenticeship for Matthew

After graduating from his 2019 Licence to Work programme at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, Mathew Karauti was offered fulltime employment at Lakeside Meats and is now in his second year of a three year butchery apprenticeship.

He is absolutely loving the work. It’s very labour intensive and involves long hours during the week which he says keeps his fitness levels up. The Christmas holidays are always a very busy time but he enjoys the interaction with the customers. His apprenticeship is giving him the knowledge in cutting, preparing and selling meat, as well as learning how to prepare and cook different types of meat – all skills needed to help do the job effectively.

Mathew credits the Licence to Work Programme for setting him up and giving him the confidence to know what was expected in the workplace, especially coming straight from school. “It’s a nervous time when you leave school, but I felt prepared after completing the programme.” This is backed up by Davidson, Mathew’s boss, who has supported him right through this journey. He said Mathew had the confidence to work and interact positively with customers and has kept growing and developing in this area. He also displayed a real willingness to learn and appeared ready for his transition from school into the workplace.

It is so rewarding to see how far Mathew has come and how well he is doing since he left school. A big thumbs up to Davidson and his crew from Lakeside Meats, for all the support and guidance you have given Mathew. Congratulations on what you have achieved in a very short time!
