Kitchen Hand to Junior Chef

Success stories

John Vine Employed

John, a 2020 Licence to work student from Tauhara College, has pursued his interest and passion in hospitality.

His work experience placement with Tim, at the Makers Kitchen, has set him up with many skills he now implements and uses in his work place at the Vine Eatery and Bar Taupo. After graduating from the Licence to Work programme, John was offered full time employment at the Vine Eatery and Bar and has worked hard to progress through to Junior Chef. This involves a lot of prep as well as cooking all the entrees, which can sometimes be up to 20 small dishes. He got to this stage by starting as a kitchen hand, then moving on to basic preparation and transferring to the dessert section. After displaying an excellent attitude and a real willingness to learn, it was decided he was ready to take on more responsibility and leadership within the cheffing world and now has the title of Junior Chef. John is thoroughly enjoying his role and says his time with Tim, while doing the Licence to Work programme, helped with his knowledge and skills moving into the hospitality industry. He still communicates with Tim for advice and says it working there was a great introduction and has set him on his way.
He is intending to start working towards his Level 4/5 in the Culinary Arts qualifications, at the beginning of 2022.
Your hard work is paying off John and it’s fantastic that you are following a pathway that you are passionate about. We will follow your progress with interest. Thanks again to all those who have helped and supported John.
