Oliver Sims, Taupo Student to Queenstown Hospitality Graduate

Oliver Sims, a 2020 Licence to Work student from Tauhara College, has made the most of all of his opportunities and is following his pathway and passion in Hospitality.

After taking time to decide where he wanted to do his work experience last year, Oliver was placed at Wairakei Resort Taupō, where he obtained many new skills and knowledge in the Food and Beverage side of the hotel. After completing his 80 hours, as part of the Taupō Pathways LTW Programme, he has never looked back. He was offered employment at the hotel and worked there over the summer break, before heading down to New Plymouth to complete his Level 5 Pacifiic International Hotel Management School course.

He has been able to live, study and learn in a world class student campus hotel facility. Real life learning takes place within the hotel school and the students fulfill many roles that include food and beverage, front office, housekeeping and management. As part of his course Oliver was placed at the newly opened Millennium Hotel in Queenstown where he will complete a paid 6 month industry placement.

Oliver is thoroughly enjoying his time in Queenstown and at the moment his work is focussed in the Food & Beverage department, bartending and table service. Next year he plans to carry on and complete his Level 6/7 certificate and is hoping to do this in Australia.

What a journey Oliver has had over the past 6 months. “The Licence to Work Programme and my placement out at Wairakei Resort is what kick-started my interest” said Oliver who has definitely made the most of the opportunities since then.

Congratulations Oliver on your achievements and your determination to follow your dreams.

We wish you all the best.
