Past Taupo-nui-a-Tia College student Michael Wilkie completed his Bachelor of Survey (BSurv.) at Otago University in 2017.
In 2011, as part of the school Gateway programme, Michael decided to give surveying a go with Cheal Consultants, he found he enjoyed the work and environment of surveying (a combination of outdoor work and desk technical time). He then went on to win the Cheal scholarship before heading to university in 2012.
Gateway provides students with the opportunity to try out various career pathways. It’s also a great way for local employers to see if students have the skills and qualities for their team.
After graduating Michael worked for 2 years for an Invercargill company before returning to his hometown of Taupo to work for Cheal Consultants full time in the capacity of a qualified surveyor.
It’s great to have our young people returning to town, bringing skills, youth and enthusiasm to help our District thrive.
